Web Marketing Using SMS (i.e. Text Messages on Mobile Phones)
I personally think that this is a surprisingly undervalued form of marketing.
Almost everyone I know has a mobile phone and so the penetration potential is huge.
Not only that but people read SMS messages on their phones wherease email is increasingly being ignored. SMS have urgency.
And yet so few people bother to harness this incredibly powerful channel.
Integrating Your SMS within a CRM.
That’s a mouthful! Most efficient businesses these days use a CRM – or client relationship manager. This is essentially a database that allows someone or indeed multiple people to analyse the business in terms of the relationships with the clients.
You can analyse leads, sales, opportunities, costs, analyse profitability – the list is endless and beyond the scope of this short note.
You can link a CMS with what’s know as an SMS gateway. This is essentially a provider that allows you to send SMS messages to people’s mobile phones directly from your database. I wrote my own CMS and the SMS gateway service I use is via a company called Esendex – although you can choose from loads of providers.
A very good CRM provider for those that don’t want to write their own is an open source CRM called SugarCRM.
(Setting up and managing a CRM is a service MKLINK can help you with if you are interested)
The Clever Bit
You have a CRM linked to an SMS Gateway. Now you can contact people directly! (Beware that like email, you can’t simply buy a list and SPAM people you don’t have a relationship with).
With my system, I can send email, voicemail, letters, sms text and faxes directly from my desktop. All from the touch of a button and COMPLETELY automated.
This HUGELY increases my response rate with my potential clients AND my existing clients when looking to offer upsell services.
I can see when they received the SMS, whether they read it and by linking a personalised landing page with the SMS, I enable people to interact with a personlised message. Ditto with faxes, letters, emails and voicemail.
Note, you can still send SMS’s to landlines – the software simply ‘reads out’ the content of the text. Again, all completely automated.
Do you see the power of all This? We can help you set this up…

2010 – Some Trends, Search Engine Changes and Implications for Your Business Online
2010 has seen many changes in the way people use the Web, and particularly in the last half of 2010 how changes with Google and how Google compiles and displays its results. All of these changes ultimately have implications for your Web presence, your traffic, your click through rates and your conversion. Here are a few examples of trends, search engine changes and possible implications.
Trends
The combined efforts of Yahoo and Microsoft in the ‘Bing’ search engine or ‘decision engine’ brought about the beginnings of a change to the long established volume patterns in the search engine world. The present in the U.S is often a good indicator of the future in the U.K., and in September Hitwise figures showed Google’s volume share to be approximately 71%, Yahoo’s to be approximately 14%, and a fast rising star in Bing with nearly 10%.
Even more widespread use of social networking and social bookmarking websites has seen a greater focus on websites like Facebook for business as well as leisure. Some recent estimates suggest that approximately 1 in 12 of the world’s population are Facebook members and December even saw Mark Zuckerberg the founder of Facebbok being named as Time (magazine’s) Person of the Year for 2010.
Google Search Engine Changes
Google introduced many relatively major changes all through the second half of 2010. June saw the introduction of Google’s new indexing system know as ‘Google Caffeine’. This system allowed updates and new content to be indexed and shown faster in Google’s search engine results.
‘Google Instant’ arrived next in September. This heralded the coming together of many technologies in an attempt to allow users to find and reach what they’re looking for more quickly and with less effort. Google designed this to be a ‘search as you type’ system that gives a combination of predictive searches and instantly displayed search engine results.
November’s ‘Instant Preview’ from Google means that a visual snapshot of your pages can be shown in the search engines results. December with Google has meant that there can now be 4 main listings from the same website in one page of search engine results if those results are relevant enough and likely to provide a good enough experience for the search engine user. There have also been major changes to the way that the results to local searches are displayed. Search engine results in these cases can produce many prominent links (with review links) to pages linked to Google places.
Implications for Business
There are now many more opportunities, and arguably some pressure, for businesses to take advantage of the business networking opportunities presented by social networking websites such as Facebook. Setting up a business presence on Facebook is now more important than ever in order to compete effectively, drive traffic to your web pages, and attract more high quality incoming links.
Optimisation of Web pages for Bing is quite similar to optimisation for Google, and the coming year is likely to bring a greater focus by businesses on how best to compete within Bing’s natural and paid for listings.
Google’s move toward ‘real time’ and the introduction of ‘Caffeine’ is likely to be more helpful to businesses as more current information and types of content become available to all more quickly e.g. your latest news, blog posts and new web pages. Potential challenges could be the need to point optimisation efforts more towards whatever is displayed in Google’s predictive keyword suggestions.
Short of businesses thinking more about how the design, appearance, and layout of pages could attract or deter clicks through from the search engines, the full effects of ‘Instant Preview’ are not yet really evident.
Search engine optimisation is still very important for businesses as emphasised by the introduction of a new Basic SEO Guide by Google, and the chance to potentially achieve the 4 listings on one page of search engine results. Finding ways of getting high quality incoming links and making each page in the business website as relevant to one main key phrase are still very important.
Making sure you are taking full advantage of Google Tools, and making the most use of ‘Google Places’ can help your business to achieve greater visibility in local searches. Good reviews and testimonials are increasing in importance for businesses e.g. the link to reviews displayed next to local search engine results.

What is Google Webmaster Tools?
According to Google themselves, “Improve your site’s visibility in Google search results. It’s fr-ee.”
In a nutshell, it’s a suite of fr-ee tools to help webmasters get the best from Google, primarily in terms of SEO.
When I say ‘webmasters’ I mean you! It’s a free service and once you have registered and setup an account, you’ll be able to see some simple and useful stuff about your web site – or indeed multiple sites. You just need to verify that you own (or manage) the site in question.
Why Bother With It?
Well, it’s useful to be able to get an overview on how Google ‘Sees’ your website. From the dashboard are links to ‘Site configuration’, ‘Your Site on the Web’ , ‘Diagnostics’ and ‘Labs’.
From these various tabs, you can quickly make sure your site is being indexed properly, amongst other things. You can change the suggested frequency that Google re-indexes your site for example and you can ensure that your site maps and robots files are included and are up to date.
Meta-information, such as page titles (important) and meta-tags are displayed if there is missing or duplicate content – a quick way to check.
A really useful tool is the malware function, which removes your site if it detects that there is malware on your site. I’ve had a client that had their site hacked and wondered why they were getting significantly less sales. If you do get hacked and it’s flagged up by Google, you can use this section to re-submit the ex-offending site once you’ve removed the malware.
One section which is possibly the most interesting (if you’re not using any form of tracking software) is the ‘search queries’ panel. This shows you which keyphrases are causing your website to be displayed and you can see if they are rising or falling against a previous date range.
You can also see who’s linking to your website, although there are far more comprehensive tools for this on the market.
Presumably, the Google Labs functions (e.g. Video sitemaps and page performance) will become more mainstream soon enough and will be added to. The suite of services here is very basic really but certainly worth a look if you haven’t already used it or haven’t invested in other, more comprehensive web monitoring and management software.
If nothing else, it enables you to monitor several websites at the same time for malware or missing pages, duplicate content etc.

What if your Target Website Visitors Live Abroad?
I’ve got a client that sells his products to Ireland.
What happens when his visitors type stuff into a search engine e.g. google.ie or google.fr ?
In his case, he was having trouble being found as the website is a .co.uk not a .ie and the hosting server is physically in the UK, not ireland.
Do YOU need to have your website found in a specific country?
Whilst the answer isn’t necessarily as simple as this, you might wish to consider :
Remember not to simply duplicate your original content.
Clearly, this could be a long winded and time consuming strategy!

As an aside, if you send newsletters/tips/factsheets etc then it’s a good policy – in my experience, to keep the actual email short & salient. You can always link to more info, like I just have.
