It’s happened again! The dreaded ‘Google Slap’. I was messing around with some landing pages and trying different stuff out
and then all of a sudden(at 4am in the morning) I got an email from Google.
“Dear AdWords Advertiser,
It has come to our attention that your Google AdWords account does not comply with our Terms of Service and Advertising Policies. As a result, your account and any related accounts have been suspended and your ads will no longer run on Google. Please be aware that you are prohibited from possessing or creating any other AdWords accounts, both now and in the future.”
What a pain. The bit that is most concerning is where they say that I can never advertise with Google ever again! Like I’ve broken the law or something.
I called them up and they quoted scripture and verse about a particular landing page not having enough content and that it didn’t look professional enough and that there wasn’t enough navigation. I felt like telling them that it was converting just nicely but there wasn’t any point.
In my opinion, telling people that their website isn’t “professional looking” means that Google is starting to get too big for its boots. There’ll be a revolution, you mark my words… In the meantime, rather than just setting up another account under a different name/credit card etc, I decided this was as good a reason as any to force me to stop being lazy and start looking at other PPC avenues to test.
I’ve already tested Facebook, LinkedIn and Bing and I guess I need to visit and re-visit others.
Trouble is, Google was just so damned EASY. And it represents most of the low-hanging fruit of traffic.
It made me complacent and that’s a dangerous thing. Lesson learned.
I’ll let you know how it goes…
