Should you link both ways from your main site to your micro-sites – if only one way – which way is best? Or if you have more do you link around a circle.

This depends on the benefits of linking in whatever direction and it depends on the purpose of each website. You may for example have recently developed a smaller website focused around a specific key phrase (sometimes called a micro-site). If this new website only has a relatively small amount of content on it, doesn’t have any / many good quality incoming links (yet) and consequently doesn’t have a reasonable PageRank™ then you probably wouldn’t get much value (for the main website) by linking to it from the main website. However, if a link from your main website could in itself provide a good quality incoming link which could help with PageRank™ for the micro-site, then that could be one of the only really worthwhile reasons for linking to that micro-site. Linking the micro-site to your main website on the other hand is probably something that’s worth doing anyway since your micro-site may be so well focused on a niche that it ranks highly simply because of a high degree of relevance to the key phrase and a low amount of competition. In short then the answer to this question depends on the benefits of linking to and from each, although in the first instance, linking to the micro-site to the main website is something that people frequently do.
