I have just read some advertisement about a product that helps you to spin articles and then distributes them to a large number of directories. Is this a) acceptable practice and b) will it seriously help with rankings?

I use something called Traffic Geyser - it's great for syndicating video stuff too. If you want, we can syndicate your artcles.

Some article directories(e.g. EzineArticles) are uhappy about posting duplicate stuff - ie they want exclusivity.

YES - it can help your Google rankings. I'll be running a seminar on this v shortly!
